How Teams Change the Game

As much as we ride alone, our deepest motivations often come from the tribe, not just the individual finish line.

For cyclists aged 30+, balancing family, work and training is tough. And we are now not even talking about group rides. That’s why at Pruvi, teams aren’t just a feature - it’s more a community fix.

Group Activities Drives Engagement and Performance

Decades of social psychology confirm that group membership shapes motivation. According to the social identity approach, people internalize their group's identity as part of their own sense of self. This deeply influences behavior in sports and exercise contexts. It means having a group to belong to not just ride for, can dramatically increase your commitment and drive PMC.

Even beyond psychology textbooks, real-world studies show that team-based challenges deliver results. For example, a 2017 study of walking competitions in a mobile app found that users increased physical activity by an average of 23% during competitions. And balance among participant fitness levels made them even more effective (arXiv).

Cycling is Created for Team Spirit

We don’t need the Tour de France to see how powerful teams are in cycling. As cycling strategists liken pelotons to chess matches, winning often depends on cohesion, not just speed. Riders suppress individual glory to elevate team goals, especially in breakaways and tactical moments within the race Cycling Weekly.

Something similar plays out in amateur riders. We at Pruvi tries to bring it online. Even when you ride solo, being part of a team works into that same strategic identity and belonging. You’re no longer just riding numbers, you’re riding for something or someone bigger than yourself.

How We Designed Teams at Pruvi

At Pruvi, we designed team competition to be meaningful, socially rich, and motivationally powerful, with psychological insights at every turn:

  • Team Identity: You’ll join micro-teams that build belonging fast. Speaking “we” wearing team avatars, celebrating shared wins, these aren’t just features, they’re pathways to identity fusion (a merging of personal identity with the group) Wikipedia.

  • Cohesion Drives Performance: Meta-analyses in sports psychology show that smaller groups with strong cohesion outperform larger, looser ones. Our team sizes and friendly rivalries are crafted for that sweet spot.

  • Motivation through Comparison + Collaboration: Team competitions mix collaboration over strategy and competition for rank. Being part of a team amplifies the incentive to ride harder for teammates and for team glory.

How It Will Work in Practice

  1. Join or form a team: whether a group of friends, local ride club, or workplace crew.

  2. Compete weekly: as a team and as individuals.

  3. Rank together: gain points, climb laddered progression.

  4. Watch your team identity strengthen through shared victories and stories.

  5. Reset for the next season or go for another round of team glory.

Why This Matters to You

You may ride alone, but you’re not a lone ranger in our app. Belonging, shared effort, and the power of “we” lead to longer-term engagement, more joy, and less burnout. At Pruvi, teams aren’t just a mode, they are a movement.

The goal is to give serious amateurs the social identity, emotional connection, and motivational power that pro teams have. Without the logistics, expense, or elite entry requirements.

What's next

And we're not going to stop there. Coming up:

  1. Team challenges - you and your squad race for territory.

  2. Customization - reflecting your gear and style.

  3. Badges, Collectibles and Challenges - because visual rewards still matter.

  4. In-depth comparisons - find out how you look in detail, without the toxicity of public leaderboards.
